A pneumatic forklift tire is an air-filled tire on a rim, built like a truck tire with deep tread and a tall sidewall. Softest ride, best flotation, most ground clearance. It is also the only forklift tire that can go flat.

Clean, uneven outdoor ground

Air tires earn their place on surfaces that are rough but not hazardous: graded dirt, packed gravel, agricultural ground, prepared yards. The sidewall flex absorbs unevenness that would beat up a solid tire, and the flotation keeps the truck from sinking into soft ground.

Lower up-front cost

An air tire costs less than a solid or a filled tire in the same size. If the machine runs low hours on clean ground and a flat would be an inconvenience rather than a crisis, that is a legitimate reason to run air.

What a flat actually costs

The tire is rarely the expensive part. The expensive part is the machine standing still, the operator standing next to it, and the work behind it stopping. On an active site, one puncture can cost more than the price difference between air and filled for the whole set.

Where punctures happen

Construction ground, demolition, and scrap yards are the obvious ones, along with anywhere carrying rebar, nails, or broken glass. Lumber yards and recycling operations belong on the same list. If your machine works ground like this, the question is not whether you will get a puncture but how often.

Underinflation is the quieter failure

Air tires also fail slowly. An underinflated forklift tire flexes more than it was designed to, builds heat, and destroys its own sidewall from the inside. Run the pressure on the machine's data plate, not the maximum printed on the tire, and check it on a schedule.

What tire pressure should a forklift run?

Run the pressure listed on the forklift's data plate, not the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall. The sidewall figure is a ceiling, not a target. Underinflation causes the sidewall to flex, build heat, and fail early, and it is the most common cause of premature air tire failure on forklifts.

Can pneumatic forklift tires be made puncture-proof?

Yes. Foam-filling replaces the air with a two-part polyurethane that cures into a solid elastomer, keeping the original tread and diameter while making a flat impossible. It is the most common upgrade for forklifts working debris-heavy outdoor ground and it can be applied to tires you already own.

Are pneumatic tires good for indoor forklift use?

Pneumatic tires are built for outdoor and uneven ground and are a poor fit indoors. The tall sidewall raises the load center and widens the turning circle, and the tread offers no advantage on smooth concrete. Cushion press-on or solid pneumatic tires are the correct choice for indoor forklift work.

Should I switch from air tires to solid?

Switch to solid if your machine works mixed indoor and outdoor surfaces, runs high hours, or logs repeat punctures. Solid pneumatic tires fit the same rims, need no pressure checks, and typically outlast air tires several times over. If you want to keep your current tread pattern instead, foam-filling achieves the same flat-proofing.
