HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT FORKLIFT TIRE

4 Factors

Your forklift's tires drive its handling, safety, and load stability, and most lift trucks are engineered for a specific tire type and size specified by the manufacturer.

Start with the floor

Sealed indoor concrete points to cushion. Mixed indoor and outdoor points to solid pneumatic. Gravel, dirt, or debris point to foam-filled. Coated or inspected floors point to a non-marking compound, depending on which type fits.

Then the duty cycle

A lift truck running two hours a day and one running three shifts wear tires at completely different rates. Heavy duty cycles justify a harder compound and a more expensive tire because the replacement interval is what actually costs you, not the tire.

Then the load

Every tire carries a load rating. Running near the top of that rating shortens tire life quickly, and running over it is a safety problem. Tell us the truck's capacity and what it actually lifts, not just the plate rating.

Drive tires and steer tires wear differently

Forklift drive tires carry the load and wear faster. Steer tires take the turning scrub. On most lift trucks, drive tires are replaced roughly twice as often as steer tires, so it's worth planning for that rather than discovering it.

Press-on tires bond to a band, and pneumatic tires mount to a rim. Both wear, corrode, and eventually need replacing. We supply forklift wheels and rims, as well as tires, and we can quote a complete wheel-and-tire assembly ready to bolt on.

If downtime is what you are actually buying against, our wheel and assembly exchange program is even faster. We bring pre-filled or pre-pressed assemblies on our own wheels, swap them for yours on-site, and take yours back to the shop. The machine rolls immediately.

Reading a Forklift Tire Size

Three numbers on the sidewall

Press-on forklift tires read outside diameter x width x wheel diameter, for example, 18x7x12⅛. Pneumatic forklift tires read section width and rim diameter, for example, 7.00-12. The formats look similar, and they are not interchangeable. The numbers are printed on the tire sidewall and usually stamped on the wheel itself.

We can walk you through both formats with the common sizes. If the sidewall has worn past the readable section, photograph the wheel and the machine's data plate and send it over. We identify sizes from photos every week.

What type of tires do forklifts use?

Forklifts use cushion press-on tires for smooth indoor floors, solid pneumatic tires for mixed indoor and outdoor work, foam-filled tires for rough outdoor ground, and poly tires on electric lifts and pallet trucks. Air tires are used in a narrow set of clean outdoor applications. The floor the truck runs on is what decides.

When should forklift tires be replaced?

It depends on the tire type. Solid and solid pneumatic tires carry a 60J line, also called the safety line, moulded into the sidewall, and they are replaced when the tread surface reaches it. Press-on tires have no 60J line and come out of service when roughly two-thirds of the original rubber height remains. Chunking, cracking, flat spots, or a tire separating from its band mean replace now regardless of either measure.

How much does it cost to replace forklift tires?

Cost depends on the tire type, the size, and the number of tires, and press-ons cost less than foam-filled assemblies. We buy direct from the manufacturers and quote at wholesale, and we quote per machine rather than over the phone from a guess.

How long do solid forklift tires last?

A solid forklift tire commonly runs two to three times longer than an air tire in the same application because it does not lose pressure, deform, or puncture. Actual life comes down to hours run, load carried, and floor condition. Rough or debris-heavy surfaces shorten the interval regardless of tire type.

How do I read a forklift tire size?

Press-on sizes are listed as outside diameter x width x wheel diameter, such as 18x7x12⅛. Pneumatic sizes are listed as section width and rim diameter, such as 7.00-12. Both are printed on the sidewall and usually stamped on the wheel.

What tire pressure should a pneumatic forklift tire run?

Run the pressure listed on the machine's data plate, not the pressure on the tire sidewall, which is a maximum rather than a target. Underinflation is the most common cause of premature sidewall failure on air forklift tires. If checking pressure daily is not realistic in your operation, foam-filling removes the issue entirely.

Do you repair forklifts?

No. We supply and fit tires, tracks, wheels, and assemblies only. We do not perform mechanical work on lift trucks. If your machine needs mechanical attention, your dealer or mechanic handles that and we take the tires off their plate.
